“Sometimes testing reveals an incidental finding, which leads to more testing, and can lead to over-treatment such as excluding a child from sports,” says Tess Saarel, MD, FAAP, Chair of the Department of Pediatric Cardiology at Cleveland Clinic Children’s. “It’s important that pediatricians are confident in their understanding of when referrals to cardiology are appropriate – and when they may not be necessary.”
