Nurses Can Prepare For CCRN/PCCN Certification with New Online Course

As a convenient alternative to traditional specialty certification training, Cleveland Clinic’s Stanley Shalom Zielony Institute for Nursing Excellence has announced the offering of a new online course for registered nurses interested in obtaining Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) or Progressive Care Registered Nurse (PCCN) certification from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) Certification Corporation.

The new CCRN/PCCN Online Review Course helps nurses prepare for CCRN or PCCN certification anytime, anywhere. The 24/7 online offering is modeled after Cleveland Clinic’s long-standing in-person CCRN/PCCN course. It features a unique video training module format, increases access to course materials, allows participants to review materials at their own pace, and delivers personalization and flexibility to the participant’s experience. Participants can choose one of two offered course groups – or both groups, if desired.

Group one includes specialty education and training in:

• Medical Cardiology, Neurology, Renal, Endocrine and Gastrointestinal

Group two includes:

• Cardiac/Vascular Surgery, Medical Vascular, Pulmonary, Multisystem and Professional Caring and Ethical Practice Test Taking Tips

Advancing practice, advancing patient care

With benefits to the nurse, the patient, the patient’s family and the healthcare organization, certification is one way a nurse can demonstrate specialty experience, knowledge and skills, according to Kelly Haight, MSN, RN, ACNS-BC, a clinical nurse specialist at Cleveland Clinic and co-facilitator of the CCRN/PCCN Online Review Course. Specialty certification illustrates that the nurse prioritizes continuing education, values the latest evidence in healthcare, and incorporates learned knowledge into the care provided to patients.

“Approximately 25 percent of Cleveland Clinic direct care nurses are certified in a specialty and this number is anticipated to grow,” she says. “Surveys demonstrate the general public prefers hospitals that employ certified nurses over those that do not. And nurse managers prefer to hire certified nurses – valuing their extended knowledge and experience. Participants can receive 5.16 American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) continuing nursing education credits for each CCRN/PCCN Online Review Course group completed. The course is always available, around-the-clock; however, nurses do need to complete the course within 6 months of registration.

Course registration for non-Cleveland Clinic participants is $150 for both course groups or $100 for each course group. The course is currently free for Cleveland Clinic caregivers.
