A Leader’s Duty: Help Others Succeed (Video)

Finding balance between opportunity and accountability

After a tragic accident, her baby brother spent six months in a burn unit. Watching how nurses cared for him and her whole family during that emotional time helped influence the career path of Janice Murphy, MSN, BSN, RN, Chief Operating Officer for Cleveland Clinic Regional Operations. She recently participated in a panel discussion led by K. Kelly Hancock, DNP, RN, NE-BC, Cleveland Clinic’s Executive Chief Nursing Officer, at the “Power of Everyone” Leadership Summit, where Murphy shared that story as well as her thoughts about what it means to be a leader at Cleveland Clinic.

In this second video segment of the panel discussion, Murphy says that experience in the hospital with her brother and an encouraging comment from a mentor about her abilities were changing moments in her life. “That gave me the drive to be a nurse,” she says. “It’s the love of patients and the love of working with caregivers.”

Murphy says leadership behavior is key to developing ourselves and others. “It’s a fine balance of allowing opportunities but providing accountability. We have a duty to help other people to be successful. Everyone’s watching your every move, how you respond, how you solve problems.” Murphy adds that caregivers are starving for coaching or mentoring. It goes beyond performance appraisals, she says, it’s about supporting people as they learn how to reach their best performance, allowing them to grow into future leadership roles.

Your teams may be starving for mentoring that will grow their leadership capabilities. Cleveland Clinic leadership programs teach how it’s possible to allow opportunities for growth while learning about accountability. More information on today’s programs is available at The Cleveland Clinic Way: Intensives, Samson Global Leadership Academy or Executive Visitors’ Program.
